This year the Knicks have no first round picks, although there have been rumors that they might try to buy a late one. On the other hand, they do have two second-round picks, and yet another rumor (as mentioned by ESPN’s Chris Sheridan) has them possibly buying two more second-rounders. Me, I can’t help but wonder why? Many fans seem excited about it and love talking about these hidden diamonds in the rough that we might find to help us turnaround. My first thought is that if we truly do want to get LeBron or some of the big names to come here, how excited are they going to be about a roster with five rookies (particularly since none of ‘em would be lottery picks or even top 25). My second thought was: how often do 2nd rounders even end up being valuable players, let alone useable?

I decided to do a little research to answer that question. I looked at the draft classes from the five years from 2000-2004. Why those years? I figured rookies sometimes take a little while to hit their stride, so this means everyone’s had at least 6 years to finally hit their groove. If they haven’t come into their own yet, we can safely assume it ain’t gonna happen. I didn’t want to go too much further back though ‘cuz it wouldn’t have included the influx of foreign players. Plus the year 2000 is cool. Oh, and one thing to note is that the Charlotte Bobcats joined the league in 2004, so that year we’ve got 30 second-rounders, but the earlier four had just 29 guys each.

As a Knicks' fan you should root for him to expose Cleveland's Mo Williams so that a certain King will get frustrated and wanna leave the Cavs. (Source: Yardbarker.com)

It’s Fan Appreciation 101 to root for your team to win, but as anyone who’s taken higher classes in Team Supportation knows, that’s just the tip o’ the iceberg. Sometimes you gotta see the larger picture, which may require you to hope your team actually loses for say a better draft position. The Indiana Pacers finished the season playing some of their best ball, but that annoyed many true-blooded Indy fans since it destroyed their lottery chances. Other times, you may root for your team to lose so that the owner finally wises up and sees it has to fire that crappy coach or GM (or both — hello Isiah Thomas and Mike Dunleavy Sr.).

Frequently, as a member of the faithful, you may even have to root for outcomes in games featuring other teams. Say you’re battling for the 8th seed in the playoffs, then you gotta watch the games involving the other teams in the battle so you can root against them. Or maybe you’re assured of being in the playoffs, but you know you match up against one team better than another. Now you gotta cheer for the right teams to win and the wrong ones to lose all so that everything falls perfectly for your one true team.

However, with the Knicks’ eliminated from the playoffs long-ago, what’s a Knick fan to root for? Things that will help us out in free agency. I spent the last month of the regular season caring less about the Knicks’ wins/loss total than about the outcome of the Raptors/Bulls’ battle for the final playoff spot. I figured that if the Raptors don’t make the playoffs, then surely Chris Bosh’s chances of remaining in Toronto drop rapidly. Does this mean he’s a sure-fire Knick, or even that he’s my top choice? No, but I like to improve my odds as much as possible. Had the Pacers finished with the fifth worst record instead of the tenth, they still might not have won the lottery, but it wouldn’t have hurt.

Thus, for a true Knick fan, here are the things for which we should be rooting in order to increase our chances during the free agency period:

…except Deron Williams.

Sorry to get your hopes up, but it’s being reported that the Jazz really want to move Carlos Boozer, and the rest of the roster for that matter.

Let’s take a look at the Jazz roster, shall we?

NO. NAME
5 Carlos Boozer PF
9 Ronnie Brewer SG
44 Kyrylo Fesenko C
47 Andrei Kirilenko SF
26 Kyle Korver SG
41 Kosta Koufos C
23 Wesley Matthews G
34 C.J. Miles SF
24 Paul Millsap PF
13 Mehmet Okur C
17 Ronnie Price PG
8 Deron Williams PG

Now, this team is young, but Sloan wants a contender now and has realized this team is going nowhere. They’re going to blow it up, so who could the Knicks use?

At first glance Okur and Korver come to mind. The more shooters the better and pairing Okur and Lee actually might increase Lee’s production. I have ZERO interest in Boozer, so I’m not even going to dive into that one.

It’s unfortunate they’ve already traded Maynor because I really liked him coming out of VCU. He’s a winner and has a great work ethic. Although, PG isn’t really a need right now.

So if the Knicks want to help the Jazz on their firesale, I say Walsh see what they’d like for Okur and maybe Korver. Other then that nobody on that roster is really attractive for a lot of teams.

Jazz are going to have some problems.
