Many felt that point guard Chris Smith, the younger brother of J.R. Smith, had a pretty good chance to make the Knicks opening day roster out of training camp before a left knee injury ended any thoughts of those plans.

But apparently the younger Smith is still a part of the Knicks plans.

March 24, 2012; Phoenix, AZ, USA; Louisville Cardinals guard Chris Smith (5) during the second half in the finals of the west region of the 2012 NCAA men

A source tells Keith Schlosser of Knicks Journal that the Knicks still plan to bring Smith aboard when his knee injury completely heals.

The original timetable for Smith was said to be three to six months and since the injury occurred in training camp, he could be almost ready to return.

Schlosser also notes that The Knicks have allowed Smith to hang around the team this season and rehab his knee at the team facilities, and he’s been a fixture at the team’s home games, sometimes making the trip to road games as well.

Smith likely won’t be added to the NBA roster as the Knicks have 15 contracts. They could elect not to bring Kenyon Martin back after his 10-day contract expires, but the thoughts are that Martin will be around for the rest of the season.

The likely option would be having Smith sign with the Knicks’ D-League affiliate the Erie Bayhawks and hopefully signing him next season, which wouldn’t be a given if another team wanted to sign him instead.

The 25-year old guard out of Louisville went undrafted in June and signed with the Knicks shortly after.

The Louisville product has not played in any preseason games after he had surgery Oct. 11 to repair his left patella tendon.

The Knicks’ roster now stands at 19 players with the deadline to cut training camp invites on Monday.

Those cuts are pretty much no-brainers and likely will include Mychel Thompson, John Shurna, Henry Simsand Oscar Bellfield, with the final two guaranteed roster spots more than likely going to Chris Copeland and Rasheed Wallace.

The injury bug hit the New York Knicks in a big way last season, especially in the postseason when they lost Amar’e Stoudemire, Baron Davis and Iman Shumpert to different injuries all in their first round series against the Miami Heat; a series that they were already playing without Jeremy Lin.

The Knicks made some changes this offseason and along with getting older comes the threat of aging bodies breaking down.

Oct. 1, 2012; Tarrytown, NY, USA; New York Knicks shooting guard Chris Smith speaks to the media at the MSG Training Facility. Mandatory Credit: Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

If any team can’t afford a plethora of injuries it’s the Knicks and so far through camp the news hasn’t been good. Stoudemire has had some minor ankle problems, Marcus Camby is currently shelved and Shumpert and Ronnie Brewer are recovering from offseason surgery. In addition, James White has a sore right hamstring and Rasheed Wallace is not fit to play, according to head coach Mike Woodson.

You can add one more name to the walking wounded as rookie point guard Chris Smith will be out three to six months as he will have surgery on his left patella tendon Thursday.

Smith wouldn’t have played a major role with the Knicks this season, but he did have an outside shot to make the team and according to ESPN’s Jared Zwerling, J.R.’s younger brother felt he was a lock to make the team, mostly because of his defense, which Woodson loves.

All this shows is how quickly a deep team on paper can become thin very quickly.

In addition to Smith, Shumpert, Brewer and Camby, Wallace and White won’t be available for the Knicks preseason opener on Thursday, meaning six of the 20 players in camp are already on the shelf before even the first exhibition game. Injuries are something that can make or break the Knicks this season.

With all of the injuries, shooting guard Mychel Thompson, and stretch fours John Shurna and Chris Copeland will have an opportunity to make a good first impression against the Wizards.

The New York Knicks are expected to offer a contract to current Knick J.R. Smith’s younger brother Chris.

ESPN’s Jared Zwerling reports that while the deal isn’t official, it is confirmed.

July 19, 2012; Las Vegas, NV, USA; Toronto Raptors center Daniel Orton (33) guards New York Knicks guard Chris Smith (44) in the second half of the game at the Cox Pavilion.
The contract will likely earn the younger Smith an invite to training camp, but I wouldn’t imagine there’s much guaranteed money included.

Smith, 24, averaged 9.7 points per game in his senior year at Louisville and played for the Knicks’ Summer League squad in Las Vegas in July.

He wasn’t very impressive in Vegas, averaging 5.2 PPG on .290/.375/.625 shooting and despite the contract, Smith appears to be a long shot to earn a spot on the Knicks’ regular season roster, but is someone the Knicks can sign and send to the D-League for a year, which is what will likely happen.
