New York Knicks Rumors: Miami Heat to pursue Carmelo Anthony

There has been an awful lot of talk in the past couple days of Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James joining forces in the very near future.

But what if that future isn’t in New York.

The thought from the Knicks standpoint is they get Anthony to opt in this year, something LeBron is also expected to do, and the Knicks will sell ‘Melo on the fact that they will chase James in the summer of 2015.

However Pat Riley isn’t one to wait around and once again could outsmart the Knicks as he intends to bring Anthony to South Beach, as Riley appears committed to adding another superstar to his ‘Big 3′.

ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein wrote:

Sources told ESPN.com that Heat officials and the team’s leading players have already started to explore their options for creating sufficient financial flexibility to make an ambitious run at adding New York Knicks scoring machine Carmelo Anthony this summer in free agency.

Whether or not Anthony and James team up in New York or Miami, it will require a massive financial commitment from both guys as both players would have to be paid well below market value. That’s especially true in Miami where Riley will also have to get Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade to take massive pay cuts as well.

Like LeBron, both Bosh and Wade can opt out of their contracts after this season, so the chance is there that all three Miami players do that and free up enough money for Riley to take a serious run at Melo.

The fact that Anthony and James want to play together is something that is heating up as ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith reported, “Melo wants to play with LeBron James. And, from what I’m being told, LeBron James wants to play with Melo. Assuming circumstances are ideal for them to do so.”

Smith also reported that there is a 95 percent chance they eventually end up on the same team.

Anthony has to let the Knicks know by June 23 whether or not he will opt in or test free agency.

Should he elect the later, could we see a “Big 4″ form in Miami for the time being?

It’s possible.

Anthony has stated time and time again that his main goal is to win a championship.

Taking a pay cut and heading to Miami to team with LeBron would give him a better chance of accomplishing that than staying in his current situation.

Needless to say the next few weeks are going to be very interesting.
