After weeks and weeks of talks and names and reports and speculation, it seems the New York Knicks have finally nailed down their next head coach. Phil Jackson has long been chasing his former disciples, first Steve Kerr, who took the Golden State Warriors job, and then Derek Fisher.

Jackson was actually fined for tampering with lil’ ole Derek during the season, but with the Oklahoma City Thunder eliminated, it seems Jackson and Fisher have had time to sit and chat. According to Frank Isola and Howard Beck, Derek Fisher has accepted the head coaching job of the New York Knicks.

Fisher’s name has been discussed for a long time, so the announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise. For the duration of the whole process, Jackson has been looking at his former players, people he can trust and mentor. He also stated he wanted a first-time coach because they don’t have a record to go on; basically, Jackson can mold them to his liking.

It’ll be interesting to see what Fisher brings with him. Fisher’s long been applauded for his leadership, and he’s truly had an impact and a calming presence on the teams he’s played on. He can deal with tough personalities and he’s played in all of the big moments, so no stage would be new for him.

As far as a system goes, the Knicks will be going for some form of the triangle, but it’ll be intriguing to see what wrinkles he adds to it. The Knicks roster has some pieces that fit the triangle, but not completely, so I don’t expect the Knicks to play a fully traditional triangle. On defense, all Knicks fans can hope for is a system that doesn’t switch everything.

More details to come as the news evolves.
