New York Knicks Rumors: Derek Fisher to meet with Knicks

Since Steve Kerr spurned the New York Knicks for the Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Derek Fisher has seemed to be the only real name associated with the Knicks vacant coaching job.

However Fisher has yet to decide if he even wants to pursue a career in coaching at this point.

He could be leaning that way though.

Even though it cost Knicks team president Phil Jackson a $25k fine, he’s finally getting his chance to sit down with Fisher to discuss becoming the Knicks next head coach.

Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com report:

Sources told ESPN.com that Jackson is planning to connect with Fisher by week’s end after giving the Oklahoma City Thunder guard some time to decompress after his team was eliminated Saturday night in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals.

However while Jackson is set to meet with Fisher, it is no guarantee he accepts the offer as he is also high on the wish list of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Plus there’s still the fact that Jackson has to not only convince Fisher to pursue a career in coaching, but also has to do quite the sell job of taking over a team who is not built to win right now.

Throw in the fact that the Knicks best player is about to become a free agent, they have no draft picks and are well over the salary cap this season and Jackson will have to do a whole heck of a lot of convincing, something that didn’t quite work with Kerr.

That definitely gives Fisher something to think about in the upcoming weeks as he told Stein and Shelburne:

“There’s for sure huge layers added to [the decision]. The personal relationship and professional relationship that I’ve had with Phil Jackson over the years, and being in the position that he’s in. And also, with the Lakers having an opening, it for sure adds layers to it. But like other important decisions in life, I don’t think you can be driven by what’s going on externally. You have to have an internal set of boundaries and just kind of a compass that you make decisions by. I’ll combine all those things as I try and make the best decision possible.”

One thing is for sure and that is the fact that Fisher is a guy that Jackson has wanted all along.

We will find out soon if the feeling is mutual.
