New York Knicks Rumors: Phil Jackson wants ‘Melo to be true to his word

It was nice to see New York Knicks president Phil Jackson address the media on Tuesday.

Who knows, maybe Steve Mills didn’t get the memo about front office personnel having to address the media.

Jackson had some interesting things to say as it pertains to the pending free agency of Carmelo Anthony, including the fact that he needs to take less money in order to stay with the Knicks.

He brought up the cores in San Antonio and Miami as reason why ‘Melo needs to take less money and said that is the beginning of team play and building chemistry.

Jackson also said he hopes that Anthony stays true to his word, as ‘Melo indicated during the season that he would be willing to take less money in order to stay in New York.

“That’s, I think, a precedent that’s been set,” Jackson told Peter Botte of the New York Daily News. “Because the way things have been structured now financially for teams is that it’s really hard to have one or two top stars or max players, and to put together a team with enough talent, you’ve got to have people making sacrifices financially.

“So we hope that Carmelo is true to his word and we understand what it’s going to take and we will present that to him at that time.”

Even more interesting was the fact that Jackson seems totally content in allowing Anthony to walk.

“I’m all about moving forward,” Jackson said. “Just deal with what is and move forward. If it’s in the cards, man, are we fortunate. If it’s not in the cards, man, are we fortunate. We’re going forward anyway.”

One thing seems apparently clear and that is the fact that Anthony will be taking a pay cut when he hits the open market this summer.

The only question is will that pay cut come from the Knicks or another franchise?
