New York Knicks Rumors: Steve Kerr, Knicks deep in dicussions

Once former New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson was relieved of his duties on Monday, many thought it was only a matter of time before Knicks’ president Phil Jackson tabbed current TNT analyst Steve Kerr as the Knicks next head coach.

Apparently that may happen even sooner than anyone anticipated.

According to reports, The Knicks and Kerr are deep into discussions for Kerr to take over as the team’s next head coach, a person familiar with the situation told Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today Sports.

Yesterday, as soon as Woodson was fired, Kerr said that he anticipated hearing from Jackson about the team’s coaching vacancy, reiterated his desire to coach, and said that he’d be interested in the Knicks job in radio appearances on SiriusXM’s NBA Radio and ESPN Chicago 1000.

The interest in Kerr is very high around the league right now as several teams apparently would like to bring Kerr aboard as an executive, but his focus is on coaching.

If Kerr is hired, Jim Cleamons is a potential candidate to become the top assistant coach, something I looked at yesterday.

It was reported yesterday that Kerr may wait to see which other coaching jobs come open before saying yes to the Knicks, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.

But today’s news makes it seems like a deal could come today or sometime this week.

It makes sense for the Knicks to get a new coach in place as soon as possible with Carmelo Anthony about to test free agency,  although it remains to be seen how a hiring like Kerr’s, who has no coaching experience, will impact ‘Melo’s decision.

If Kerr is hired, he plans to honor his commitments with TNT throughout the playoffs.
