When the New York Knicks take the court to open up next season, it still remains to be seen if they will open the season with Carmelo Anthony in a Knicks uniform.
It also remains to be seen if Tyson Chandler will still wearing blue and orange as well.
If he isn’t, that seems just fine with Chandler.
Chandler, speaking to Marc Berman of the New York Post, dropped some hints on Tuesday that he just may want out of New York prior to next season.
“I definitely don’t want to waste another season,’’ Chandler said before the Knicks faced the Nets Tuesday at Barclays Center. “I don’t want to waste this season. I’m not into wasting seasons. Your time is too short in this league and I want to win a championship, another one. I’m not into wasting seasons.’’
While that wasn’t Chandler coming out and requesting a trade, he pretty much did put down the framework to do so this offseason.
That actually may be a bonus for the Knicks.
As constructed, this Knicks team is very far away from competing for a championship, something Chandler can still help a good team achieve.
With his expiring contract and ability to still play at a high level, Chandler could be Phil Jackson‘s number one, and only, trade chip this summer.
If it came to that, I would hate to see Chandler go, but it is a move, if made properly, that could benefit both sides.
Chandler could end up with a better franchise with a chance to win another ring before his career is all done, and the Knicks could potentially bring in a draft pick or younger option, something they need both of.
So while the Knicks don’t have any salary cap room or draft picks to improve for next season, it could still turn into a very interesting offseason.
