New York Knicks Rumors: Could Derek Fisher be next Knicks coach?

Who Phil Jackson will hand pick to become the next coach of the New York Knicks has turned into the hot topic in the Big Apple.

It’s all but a forgone conclusion that Mike Woodson will be coaching his final 11 games with the team and many expect Jackson to make a splashy hire. However yesterday I looked at how that may not be the case as guys like Tyronn Lue and Steve Kerr could be at the top of the list.

It looks like you can enter another one of the Zen Master’s former players to that list.

Sam Amick of USA Today notes that he wouldn’t be surprised if  if the Knicks pursue Derek Fisher to coach the team next season, given the mutual respect between Jackson and the 39-year-old guard, who plans to retire at season’s end.

The inclusion of Fisher to the list is an interesting one as it isn’t immediately known if Fisher would have any interest in the job.

However while a guy like Fisher, who has no coaching experience, would be a head scratcher, he would go a long way to solving one of the Knicks biggest problems-changing their losing culture.

Fisher is a winner and a natural leader, something the Knicks are void of on their current roster.

His five NBA championships are exactly four more than all of the Knicks current players have combined, not counting the two won by Shannon Brown as Brown has only been with the team for 12 games and is unlikely to return next season.

Amick also notes that Jackson will eventually surround himself in the front office with his people and that could also be an eventual landing spot for Fisher.
