Dear Phil Jackson,
Welcome to Gotham. Welcome to the greatest city in the world. I don’t need to give you a pep talk about this city because you know your way around town. It’s been 40 years since you were part of the New York Knicks’ glory days that won this city’s only basketball championships. Oh, how things have gone their different ways since you left.
You kinda became the greatest coach ever and coached the greatest player of all-time and possibly the most dominant athlete in American sports history, winning 6 rings. You then went to Hollywood and coached the team of the decade and led them to 5 rings.
You know what we Knicks fans have been watching lately? J.R. Smith. Al Harrington. Steph Marbury. Steve Francis. Malik Rose. Eddy Curry. Isiah Tomas. The list goes on and on.
We have also seen LeBron James tease us about playing here, but decided go to Miami for a big reason: Pat Riley. Riley sold LeBron on championship rings, banners, and legacies. The Knicks sold him on billboards and being best friends with Tracy Morgan.
That ends with you.
Now you throw your rings on the table. You look players right in their eye and tell them what you expect out of them and what they can expect out of a team ran by you.
Most importantly, players have to know what to expect out of you, Phil Jackson – President of Basketball Operations of the New York Knicks.
There’s stories flying around that you want to do some work out of California. No way. You are the face of the future and looked upon to finally steer this ship into calmer waters. You can’t steer a ship in the Hudson River if you are taking a tan in Los Angeles.
It’s time to give a reason why Madison Square Garden is the “Mecca of Basketball.” MSG has always been an attractive arena for players to call home, but the jersey for the team they were playing for wasn’t. The Garden was always elite, the Knicks have been disgraceful. It’s time for that to change. Players now come here because they trust you and trust that playing for the Knicks has one goal and one goal only: to win a championship.
We need to see you in the tunnel. In the 3rd row of the Garden. In the Owner’s Box. The fans need to know you are ALL in. The players you plan on acquiring for the Knicks need to know what you are ALL in.
We aren’t going to tell you who to bring in, who to trade, and who to draft (if we ever get that luxury ever again). We trust you.
We are all in for you.
Are you all info for us?
