The New York Knicks have been awful this season.
That’s usually bad enough of a story but the Knicks possibly have even a bigger problem to worry about. That story is the possibility of superstar Carmelo Anthony walking away in free agency and leaving for absolutely nothing.
The Knicks gave up so much just to get him to New York and for him to leave for nothing would leave the Knicks in shambles for years to come.
Would it even make any sense for Anthony to return at this point?
It would make sense for him to stay.
The Knicks are going through a bad season, but in 2015 they are losing an abundance of expensive contracts. Players like Amar’e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton, J.R. Smith, and Andrea Bargnani are all eligible for free agency.
With all those contracts off the books the Knicks have cap flexibility to bring in an All-star supporting cast.
The free agent class is absolutely filled with stars, such as Rajon Rondo, Kyrie Irving, LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love, Roy Hibbert, Brook Lopez, and Al Jefferson. With all the cap room the Knicks would be shedding they could easily bring it two of those stars to team up with Anthony.
The Knicks will have a lot of cap room to bring in the right guys to create an NBA championship caliber team. Also, being in the big market of New York City always helps as stars will want to play in New York with a superstar like Anthony.
Anthony has said his main goal is to win an NBA championship and staying in New York would absolutely be the best decision as playing in a big market will lure all the top tier players to New York during free agency in 2015.
