The New York Knicks want to be buyers at the February 20 NBA Trade Deadline. While they are unlikely to land the point guard they covet in Rajon Rondo or Kyle Lowry, they could be turning their attention to another big named player.
According to Alex Kennedy, the Knicks are among a number of teams that are turning their attention to Orlando Magic guard Arron Afflalo as Kennedy notes the Magic are flooded with calls for him with the deadline just six days away.
The Charlotte Bobcats, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs come to mind. Pretty much any team that wants to be a buyer at the deadline and could use a starting shooting guard or additional scorer. Afflalo has been excellent this season and his trade value has never been higher.
Afflalo is having an excellent season, the best of his NBA career, averaging 19.4 points per game and could give the Knicks another legitimate scoring option. The six-year pro is also outstanding defensively, a trait that could never hurt this Knicks team.
However the Knicks will run into the same problem they will have trying to make any deal to attempt to improve this team- they have nothing to offer.
A team like the Magic will certainly want draft picks and a young player or two for Afflalo and the Knicks don’t have enough of either to offer.
Iman Shumpert makes sense, but his trade value is much lower than it was early in the season, meaning the only real chip the Knicks have to dangle is Tim Hardaway Jr., something I hear they aren’t against moving.
While bringing in a player like Afflalo would be nice, at the end of the day I just don’t see the Knicks having enough assets to blow the Magic away in any potential deal.
