New York Knicks: Does Carmelo Anthony make other players better?

When a team struggles in the fashion the New York Knicks have, a lot of things need to fall on the shoulders of that team’s best player.

In this case I am talking about Carmelo Anthony.

While Anthony may be one of the best scorers in the NBA, in terms of winning, his career has been a failure to this point. Melo is trying to change that stereotype about him not being a leader and a winner, but no matter what he tries it doesn’t work.

TNT’s Charles Barkley feels he has the answer when he said on Thursday night’s TNT telecast that Anthony simply doesn’t make his teammates better. Barkley also commended Anthony for being a special talent, but questioned his leadership.

Barkley is a long time Knicks hater, but it is very hard to argue with his point here.

As much as I like Anthony and would like to take his side here, that is still one part of his game that he has to prove.

Anthony hasn’t been surrounded with the best talent, but some of the great ones get the most of the guys around them. You think Kobe Bryant isn’t a great leader and winner? He got the lazy Andrew Bynum to be motivated enough to win a couple of rings. In Bryant’s case, he has won with less than what Melo has now and so have other greats.

Melo takes a lot of heat in terms of leadership and as much as I like to stick up for Anthony, most of it is deserved and that won’t change until he changes.

Anthony’s game isn’t tailored to winning and helping his teammates succeed. It’s tailored to taking high volume shots and scoring the ball. That’s it.

We’ve seen players such as Bryant and LeBron James tailor their games to their teammates in the past decade, something Anthony isn’t willing to do.

On the rare occasions when he is, the Knicks record is outstanding.

However while I agree with Barkley’s assessment, I do have to point out that not all of this is Melo’s fault.

The Knicks have the most one dimensional roster in the NBA and they just aren’t built to win.

However being a superstar means you get the finger pointed your way, so at the end of the day I have no problems with his statements regarding Anthony.

Melo has only one way to respond to the criticism- start being a leader and start winning.
