After the embarrassing start to the New York Knicks season, the Knicks have experienced another setback in the form of an injury to Tyson Chandler. Chandler fractured his ankle and it was announced that he will miss four to six weeks. Chandler has been a great player for the Knicks and having this injury only makes things worse. It was said that he fractured his fibula and while he will not need surgery, the rehab process will be lengthy and the Knicks will miss his inside presence.
This seriously impacts the Knicks as they do not have a true center on the roster in Chandler’s absence. They will have to work with Kenyon Martin and Amar’e Stoudemire at center and also use Cole Aldrich at center occasionally.
Andrea Bargnani filled in nicely on Friday, but he will become a liability if forced to play in the middle for long stretched of time.
That is a big decline from Chandler since he anchored the defensive game and grabbed rebounds constantly. Stoudemire is not as good as he used to be and his skills has declined due to his frequent injuries, as he has shown recently, and Kenyon Martin is another player that needs his minutes limited because he has had recurring injuries lately. Plus, Cole Aldrich is inexperienced and in his NBA career has not lived up to his expectations.
The Knicks obviously could use more help in the frontcourt, and an option they could go to is to look for a free agent, although management says they aren’t considering signing any big men at the moment.
One player they should sign is Jason Collins. Collins has been considered by the Knicks, according to Mike Woodson and could be a Chandler-type player with his defense and toughness. Another player they could have used was Earl Barron. Barron has been on the Knicks in two separate instances and could’ve given some temporary rebounding and defensive help.
Overall, this injury really is a problem for the Knicks and it definitely calls for concern. Although it is still very early in the season, this is the type of thing that will make the season go wrong. The Knicks need all the help they can get especially now in the center position since Chandler went down.
All the Knicks need to do now is get by and try their hardest to win games by outscoring the other team since they will be without a defensive force. They will most likely end up having a small lineup meaning that Melo will have to start at power forward and K-Mart or Amar’e will be at center. As I mentioned before, they need to just get by and once Chandler is back in the rotation, things will be back to normal.
