All good NBA teams have a player on their team that leads the way and guides the team through both good and bad times.
Leadership is key if a team wants to contend for a finals victory. Last season, the New York Knicks had one of the greatest leaders of all time in Jason Kidd, as well as other veteran leaders such as Marcus Camby. This season, the Knicks roster has changed around a lot, and a new leader has to step up.
The player who must step up and lead the team is Tyson Chandler.
Chandler has been to the finals, and won them. As a member of the 2011 Mavs team who upset the Heat to win the Finals in six games, Tyson was a key player and a locker room leader on the team, and he helped pull a major upset vs. the newly formed Big 3 in Miami.
The odds were very much against Dallas, so it was no easy feat knocking down the superstar Heat team.
Chandler has also won a Defensive Player of the Year award, and was one of the players who turned the Knicks franchise from the laughing stock of the NBA to a formidable team. He has all the credentials to be a team leader, and he has to step up if he wants to see the Knicks improve from last season.
This wouldn’t be anything new for Chandler either.
Throughout his career he has been a locker room leader, but he always had a bigger presence alongside him, such as Kidd in Dallas and last season here in New York.
Now, he will have to be that leader. He will have to take the challenge or see the Knicks crumble under a lack of leadership, like what happened during the final days of Mike D’Antoni’s tenure as coach.
Chandler would be the best player on the Knicks to lead, and without a proven veteran like they had last season, Chandler will have to step up to the challenge.
