New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks trying to obtain Tyler’s D-League right’s

After the New York Knicks released promising young big man Jeremy Tyler on Friday in favor of guard Chris Smith, it looks as if the organization isn’t done pursuing the big man.

According to the New York Post’s Marc Berman, the Knicks are trying to obtain Tyler‘s D-League rights from Golden State’s D-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Tyler, who missed all preseason rehabbing a foot injury, is free to sign with any NBA team, but can’t join a D-League team besides Santa Cruz unless the Warriors agree to a deal to relinquish his rights.

Berman notes that is still rehabbing at the Knicks’ Westchester training facility as the club engages Golden State in talks to obtain Tyler’s D-League rights.

Tyler isn’t expected to be healthy enough to play until December, but the Knicks would like to get a look at him on their D-League squad before possibly re-signing him.

The 6’10″ project impressed enough in the Vegas Summer League with the Knicks that they gave him a partially guaranteed deal, so they already committed $200K to him.

Of course new general manager Steve Mills could have made this simple by keeping Tyler around instead of keeping Smith, who has no business being on an NBA roster, even if he will spend most of the year in the D-League.

As a side note, Smith’s $492K minimum contract becomes fully guaranteed Monday night at 5 p.m.
