If there was one area of New York Knicks’ superstar Carmelo Anthony’s game to knock in the past, it may be his ability to lead.
Leaders are born. You just can’t one day wake up and decide to be a leader. It doesn’t work that way.
However despite his failures in the past, it looks as if Anthony is about to challenge that theory.
Certainly his ability makes him a leader on the court, but the question has always been could Melo be the leader of a locker room?
The Knicks tried to make that easy on him last year when they brought in veterans such as Jason Kidd, Rasheed Wallace and others to take some of that pressure away from Anthony.
But that’s not the case this season. This is truly ‘Melo’s team to lead and it’s something he must do.
So far Anthony has passed the early season test with flying colors.
The distraction of his pending free agency aside, ‘Melo has said all of the right things when talking to the media, but more importantly it looks like he is stepping up to be the vocal leader of this team, something he really hasn’t been in the past.
Anthony has stated recently that he wants to be more of a vocal leader in the locker room.
No that could just be his way of trying to squash the free agency talk for now and if so it is good thinking.
But teammates have noticed the change in Anthony, which is a good thing from a leadership standpoint.
“He expressed what he expected from us, and how he sacrificed his whole summer to work hard and lose weight and be in the best shape he’s been in,” Smith said. “He expects us to do the same thing.”
“I think he’s been more vocal this year,” Woodson said Sunday.
That’s exactly what leaders are supposed to do and hopefully the rest of the Knicks team takes notice.
Of course we will have to wait and see if it translates to positive results on the floor, but at the minimum it is a very good sign.
