New York Knicks Need to Be Honest With Fans

Once again the secrecy and embarrassment of the James Dolan era has come to the news wire. First the demotion of Glen Glunwald three days prior to the start of camp, and now Amare Stoudemire ( first reported by Daily News) had again knee surgery this summer.

When speaking to Dr. Glen Zuck, an orthopedic surgeon ( not Amar’e’s doctor) he thought the procedure was unusual, as it was reported as a cleanup procedure.  With two surgeries during last season, Dr. Zuck wondered why the cleanup was not done during the prior procedures.

I used to tell my patients all the time, “The only difference between major surgery and minor surgery is, minor surgery happens to someone else.” This is major news, three surgeries in one year is not minor.  This is major bad news.  I like Amar’e, and he has a great work ethic, but it appears his knees, like the tires on a car, are just running out of tread.

As a fan, what stuns me is the secrecy behind not only Stoudemire’s but J.R.  Smith’s surgery as well.  Steve Kerr, formerly the Phoenix Suns GM, would not offer Amare the long term deal the Knicks did, as his medical staff felt his knees would not hold up to a long term deal.  Did not the Knicks’ great medical staff not know the condition of his knees prior to his $100 million deal?

In essence, the Knicks gave away David Lee and Zach Randolph to end up with Amar’e.  No wonder we have no draft picks left.  Now, before everyone blames Grunwald, this was all the doing of Donnie Walsh.  Some consider him an icon, but he gave away the store while he was with the Knicks.  I am curious how corporate star Steve Mills spins this.  Stoudemire’s contract now is as tradeable as A-Rod’s

My father once told me “If you sit down at a poker game and don’t know who the mark is in the first five minutes, you’re it”.  It appears the Knicks are the mark of the NBA.  While Allan Houston is a great guy, is he ready for the other horse traders that serve as GMs in the NBA?  I guess that’s why they brought in Steve Mills again.  You remember Steve, he was the same guy who hired Isiah Thomas

Poker, anyone?
