Training camp is right around the corner for the New York Knicks and coach Mike Woodson has some huge decisions to make.
It begins at the POINT guard position.
HERE’S MY POINT
It begins at the point; the point is the point of attack on both offense and defense.
Jay Bilas stated “It’s a point guard dominated league.” “You can’t have success in the NBA without a great point guard.”
Woodson must impose his will to win this season and it begins at the point guard.
To win a championship, a point guard must be able to communicate with his teammates both on and off the court. We all know it is Carmelo Anthony’s team but a true point guard bust take the leadership role on the court.
It begins with Raymond Felton.
Felton must step up his game this year both offensively and defensively to hold the starting point guard position. Felton (6’0″, 205 pounds) has the ability to be a solid point guard, but he seems to start off hot early each season and then fade off.
The great point guards control the game; he needs to once again do this. Often he becomes passive and that hurts the Knicks. In 2011, he averaged nine assists per game, but last year fell off to 5.5 apg., in 2012 in Portland he was at 6.5 per game. He also averaged 17.1 points per game in 2011, versus 14.0 in 2013.
While the 14.0 points per game were the same as his rookie year in Charlotte, he must show growth.
Now compound that with his free throw attempts.
Last year he averaged only 1.9 attempts per game versus 3.3 his rookie year. In crunch time Felton proved he can play solid defense, His block on Stephen Curry an example) but he has to stop turning it on and off and allow opposing point guards to whisk past him.
I am glad he lost more weight during the offseason, but this is his year to show if he can be a pure New York Point guard. To do this, Raymond has to penetrate and make the three ball for the Knicks to win.
He must go back to the basics and play hard his entire time on the floor and stop pacing himself. Felton needs to watch his backcourt mates as they are on his tail and both have something to prove.
