As the NFL begins its season, the New York Jets and Giants are in the spotlight. We know the Giants as the classier franchise that wins and the Jets as a circus. As a Jets fan it is entertaining but frustrating at same time. It was fun when they were winning, but now that they are the laughing stock of the league, it is far from fun.
The New York Knicks aren’t the Jets, but are turning into a mini circus of their own.
J.R. Smith’s five-game drug policy is just another bozo move added to the list of the shooting guard’s mistakes. Is Smith one of the Knicks best players? I would say so. His scoring off the bench is crucial to the team’s success, but his off-court shenanigans are always an eye catcher.
This isn’t Smith’s first suspension to start a season, as he was suspended for the first three games of the 2007-2008 season for an incident in a Denver nightclub. This will be his second Knicks suspension, his first coming at Game 4 vs. the Boston Celtics in the first round for elbowing Jason Terry. Are any of these terrible crimes? No, but it just seems like trouble and controversy always follows Smith.
The Knicks are locked in with Smith for the next three years for $17.95 million, and Smith’s suspension isn’t a great way to kick it off. Everyone will forget about it once were 25 games in, but it just makes people doubt Smith’s judgment. Has a little weed ever hurt anybody? I’ll have you answer that yourself, but it’s against the NBA drug policy so Smith should have known better.
Metta World Peace is now a Knick and he might just add to the circus himself. He is coming home to New York and says he came to New York to win a championship. World Peace has been a head case his whole career but as an older player, the Knicks hope those days are behind him. He will 100% give the New York media sound bites and have them entertained all season, but all jokes aside he needs to help the Knicks win.
As I said before, the Knicks aren’t quite the circus the Jets have been, well because that’s pretty much impossible, but they will definitely be an interesting team to watch this season.
Mike Woodson is no Rex Ryan, and let’s hope he never becomes that.
Let’s hope this circus is cancelled before it ever hits the road.
