Newly acquired New York Knicks’ forward Andrea Bargnani is used to missing games at this point in his career.
The former No. 1 overall pick was hoping to use a strong showing for his home country Italy in the European Championships to come into NBA training camp strong and ready to go for his new team.
That won’t happen now.
Bargnani is out for Eurobasket — the European championships that start in two weeks —because of pneumonia, reports Sportando. While Bargnani is recovering from the illness he’s not going to be right in time to join the team as it heads to Slovenia for the tournament.
While that is the bad news for Bargnani, the good news is that he should be recovered (knock on wood) by the time the Knicks report to training camp in about five weeks.
That’s good news for the Knicks, who traded for Bargnani and his insanely huge contract to bring them a floor-spacing four.
Due to injuries he shot just 30.9 percent from three last season and 29.6 percent the season before that and doesn’t play much defense and rebounds very poorly for a seven-footer.
It would have been nice to see how Bargnani looked in Eurobasket however the most important thing for the Knicks is for him to get healthy and find that outside shot. If he does, he could end up playing a big role on what should be a very good Knicks team.
