New York Knicks Rumors: Tyler earns invite to camp

Judging by their needs and his performance early on in the Vegas Summer League, many felt it wouldn’t be long before the New York Knicks made an official invite to training camp to Jeremy Tyler.

They did that on Friday when the Knicks signed Tyler to a non-guaranteed minimum-salary contract with an invite to training camp. That’s similar to the deal that Chris Copeland received from the team last year.

Hopefully Tyler experiences similar results.

Mark Berman of the New York Post also surmised that Tyler could get a partial guarantee, when he wrote this weekend that there was a “big chance” that the 22-year-old center would draw a camp invitation.

Tyler was a second-round pick of the Charlotte Bobcats in 2011, but he made his NBA debut that fall with the Golden State Warriors, who traded for his rights on draft night.

He made 23 late-season starts for a depleted Golden State squad his rookie year, but he averaged just 20.9 minutes per game as a starter, notching 7.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.

Tyler didn’t see much time last season when the Warriors sent him to the Hawks at the trade deadline in a move to get under the tax line.

The Hawks cut him two weeks later, but he’s resurfaced with the Knicks summer league team, averaging 12.8 PPG and 6.4 RPG.

He’s a 6’10″ center out of San Diego, who committed to Louisville. He chose Louisville over UCLA and USC. Tyler later retracted his commitment to Louisville and instead signed with an Israeli professional basketball club, skipping his senior year of high school in the process, which looking back turned out to be a huge mistake.

The Knicks need frontcourt depth badly, so I would expect that Tyler will be given every opportunity to earn a spot on the Knicks opening day roster.
