According to Howard Beck of the New York Times, the Knicks are in the process of acquiring the 7-foot forward Andrea Bargnani from the Toronto Raptors for a package including Marcus Camby, Steve Novak and two future draft picks (one first-round and one second-round).

While this unloads the last two years of Camby’s 3 year $13.15 million contract and the last three years of Novak’s 4 year $15 million contract, this also takes in the last two years of Bargnani’s 5-year $50 million contract consisting of  $22.25 million.

Why this would be good for the Knicks:

With only a mid-level exception and veteran minimum contract available for the Knicks in the free agency market, the Knicks can only make little improvements.  But with this trade, this adds a player that can shoot around the rim and even shoot from three which makes him able the space the floor nicely.  With his offense and Tyson Chandler’s defense at the center postion, Woodson would be able to mix-and match lineups very easily.

This trade also gets rid of Camby who battled with injuries all last season and played very little minutes when he was healthy. While Bargnani has also dealt with injuries, he has been producing and over the course of his 7 year career averaged 15.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and over 36% from 3-point range.

Why this would be good for the Raptors:

Ever since Jonas Valanciunas proved that he can be a solid center, and Amir Johnson proved that he could be a solid forward, the Raptors just don’t need Bargnani and his huge contract anymore.  After being taken with the first overall pick in 2006, he’s never delivered on his potential, and the Raptors’ fans and coaches have given up on him.

Adding a sharp shooter like Novak gives the Raptors some great shooting from three point and adding Marcus Camby –  I really don’t know what he can help with – maybe 3 years ago… but now not so much.
