Amar’e Stoudemire to come of Knicks’ Bench

With Amar’e Stoudemire and his $100 million contract coming back soon, the question on everyone’s mind is what will STAT’s role  be when he does return- likely next week.

While no actual announcement has been made yet, it looks like Knicks’ head coach Mike Woodson will use Stoudemire off the bench, unless injuries dictate otherwise.

ESPN’s Ian Begley reported that, through a source with knowledge of the Knicks thinking that Stoudemire will indeed have to accept a bench role, something he has said he is willing to do.

Of course with all the injuries the Knicks have, that may not be an option.

The Knicks are hoping that Stoudemire can return Tuesday at home vs. the Portland Trail Blazers. However sources cautioned there is a possibility he will have to return as a starter because of injuries. Carmelo Anthony missed his second consecutive game Friday night against the Sacramento Kings with a hyperextended left knee and Raymond Felton is out four to six weeks with a fractured right pinky finger.

“It’s a fluid situation (because of injuries),” Begley’s source said. “But they want him to come off the bench to start.”

Woodson hasn’t commented on Stoudemire’s role since the forward went down with a knee injury, but Begley’s source also notes that while it is common for injured players to come off the bench to ease their way back into things, Woodson plans to use Stoudemire off the bench for the rest of the season.

Given the Knicks 21-9 start, not disrupting chemistry is the main goal for Woodson and by that thinking alone, bring Stoudemire off the bench is really the only move right now.
