It has been a season filled with injuries for the New York Knicks so far and with the upcoming return of forward Amar’e Stoudemire, the Knicks are getting some more good news as the calendar gets ready to turn to 2013,

Injured second-year guard Iman Shumpert said he will join the Knicks for Sunday’s practice on a limited basis when the club returns from its West Coast trip, but is not ready to be cleared for contact — the final step to his long-awaited return, writes the New York Post’s Marc Berman.

Friday is exactly eight months to the day when Shumpert tore his ACL in Game 1 of the Knicks playoff series against the Miami Heat. The original timetable for Shump’s return was set at 6-8 months.

Shumpert practiced on a limited basis with the Knicks’ D-League team, Erie, when it was in town last week.

“I’m starting to do conditioning and non-contact stuff with the team,’’ Shumpert told Berman. “I’m going to start a little bit more with them when we get back. Then it’s up to the trainers.’’

He still says he is expecting to come back sometime in January, but hasn’t set an exact timetable.

One thing Shumpert does note is that the recent injury to Raymond Felton isn’t going to make him rush back. When he is cleared to go, he will be out there again.

However while Knicks’ fans have anxiously awaited the return of Shumpert, this is good news. As long as his knee responds well and doesn’t experience swelling, it won’t be long until the Knicks best defensive player is once again back on the court.
