Where would the New York Knicks be without head coach Mike Woodson? They certainly wouldn’t be 6-0 and playing their best basketball in years. There are quite a few reasons why Coach Woodson deserves a lot of credit for how well the Knicks are playing.

Woodson is getting through to Carmelo Anthony. He is showing Anthony the value of sharing the ball, and Anthony is buying in. Anthony is getting other players involved and making them better. His unselfish play is rubbing off on his teammates. As a result, the Knicks are playing great team basketball.

Woodson convinced J.R. Smith to come off the bench. He saw a valuable role for Smith as a sixth man, but Smith was unhappy about it. Now Smith is an early candidate for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.

Defense is now a priority. The Knicks are one of the top defensive teams in the league right now thanks to the defensive-minded Coach Woodson. The players are playing smart, aggressive and harassing defense.

The players respect Woodson. Woodson is connecting with his players, but he is also holding them accountable. This is easier said than done with a roster full of stars and former stars. But the players are following his plan.

Woodson is winning. The Knicks are 6-0 with Woodson as head coach this season. His formula for winning is clearly working. This is the ultimate measuring stick for coaches in the NBA.

Coach Woodson deserves much of the credit for the Knicks’ tremendous start. Woodson has the Knicks playing their best basketball in years. The Knicks would not be in this position without him.

Edwin Torres was born in New York City. He has been a Knicks fan since the early 1980s. He has visited Madison Square Garden on many occasions to watch the Knicks and his favorite player, Patrick Ewing. For more articles, follow him on Twitter @FlipPoker.
