The New York Knicks dominated the Miami Heat in their season opener last night. There was so much to like about the win. But I was most impressed by the performances of their three new point guards Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd and Pablo Prigioni. Back in June, I wanted the Knicks to re-sign point guard Jeremy Lin. But during last night’s game, Linsanity never crossed my mind. The new Knicks point guards made me forget all about Lin.
Felton played like he never left New York, tallying 14 points and nine assists. Kidd added 12 points and three assists. Prigioni had three assists in his NBA debut. The three of them combined for 26 points and 15 assists. And they did this against the defending champions. The last time Lin faced the Heat, he had just eight points and three assists.
Last season, we wondered if Lin could coexist with Carmelo Anthony. Last night, Felton, Kidd and Prigioni proved that they can. Anthony (30 points, 10 rebounds) played like an MVP. Ball movement was excellent. Six players scored in double figures.
Those of us who condemned the Knicks for letting Lin go can rest easy. The Knicks have three talented point guards who already have the offense humming. Soon we will be singing their praises and saying, “Jeremy who?”
