Raymond Felton in great condition as camp starts

One of the interesting topics of New York Knicks Media Day was the condition that new (and old) point guard Raymond Felton is in heading into training camp.

To think this isn’t a make or break year as far as Felton’s career goes would be severely underestimating what is expected of Felton in his second go around in a Knicks uniform.

Felton is coming off an abysmal season in Portland in which he averaged only 11.4 points and 6.5 assists per game, while shooting only 40 percent from the floor and 30 percent from behind the arc.

It not only was a bad season for Felton statistically, but was one in which his conditioning and commitment was called into question.

Monday, Felton stepped up and admitted to being out of shape last season.

“I want to get it out there — I came into Portland out of shape,” Felton said. “Being in a lockout year, I just got really relaxed, got complacent, didn’t work as hard because I didn’t think we were to have a season. I’m going to go ahead and say that — I was out of shape when we first went there. I played myself into shape towards the second half of the season.”

That was a big question mark when the Knicks decided to bring Felton back and let fan-favorite Jeremy Lin to walk.

Early on, all signs look good in terms of Felton being in great shape.

The North Carolina product has been one of several Knicks’ players that showed up a couple of weeks early to get himself ready for training camp and according to multiple sources at the training facility, Felton is in solid shape and motivated for his second act in a Knicks uniform.

“He looks great,” one observer said (per ESPN’s Ian Begley). “He looks like 2010 Ray.”

If Felton plays anything like the 2010 version that averaged 17 points and nine assists for the Knicks in 54 games before being dealt to Denver in the Carmelo Anthony trade, then the Knicks have exactly what they need in a point guard.

During the course of the early part of the season, Felton will be forced to answer many questions about replacing Lin; however he shouldn’t have to answer many more about being in shape as it looks like he’s showing the commitment to winning in New York.
