New York Knicks Rumors: What Knicks’ Rotation Could Look Like with Marcus Camby

Very rarely does the signing of a 38-year-old who has averaged only 9.7 points per game throughout 16 NBA seasons mean much, but that is what Marcus Camby will do for the New York Knicks if he chooses to sign with them.

ESPNNewYork.com’s Jared Zwerling reported that a meeting between the Knicks and Camby went very well, and Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski added that the Knicks and Brooklyn Nets are the front-runners to land Camby via a sign-and-trade.

However, if the Knicks can acquire Camby, it would do wonders for their depth, especially up front where the Knicks were awful when Tyson Chandler was off the floor a year ago.

With that being said, let’s take a quick look at Mike Woodson’s possible rotation for the 2012-13 season, if Camby is in the fold.

Starters

The Knicks won’t have their starting five intact until Iman Shumpert returns from injury in January, but a five-man unit of Jeremy Lin, Shumpert, Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Chandler is a pretty good one.

To start the season, J.R. Smith, whose brother, Chris, thinks J.R. will re-sign with the team, could move into the starting lineup, but the Knicks desperately need to sign another 2-guard.

Randy Foye has been mentioned, but there won’t be the necessary money to sign him.

Once the Knicks get healthy, though, the rotation should fall into place nicely.

Bench

Add Camby to a bench that includes Smith (if re-signed), Jason Kidd and Steve Novak (if re-signed).

That’s a solid nine-man rotation for Woodson and if Jared Jeffries re-signs for the veteran’s minimum, that’s 10 bodies Woodson could run out there on a nightly basis.

Looking at the potential bench, the Knicks have a capable lead guard in Kidd, capable shooting in Novak and Smith and good interior defense with Jeffries and Camby.

Josh Harrleson, Jerome Jordan and Toney Douglas will likely have to be part of a sign-and-trade to get Camby, but being able to go 10 deep will be a blessing off the bat for Woodson.

The Knicks could still use another shooting guard, another big body and perhaps a third point guard, but if they can sign Camby, the 2012-13 rotation could look pretty nice.
