This morning the NBA announced their participants of the Sprite rising stars slam dunk contest. Among those participating will be Knicks rookie point guard Iman Shumpert. Shumpert will be joined by Minnesota rookie Derrick Williams, Chase Budinger of the Houston Rockets and Pacers guard/forward Paul George.
We haven’t seen much in the way of explosive dunks this season from Shumpert, but at 6’5 he has the size and athleticism to pull some crazy ones off. You can visit the NBA’s Rising Star Dunk Contest website to check out all of the relevant info and dunk videos for each of the contestants.
Also of note, the NBA has altered the format for the dunk contest this year. In this year’s version there will be only one round where each dunker will receive 3 dunks a piece and the winner will be decided entirely by fan votes. This idea seems to be yet another example of the NBA slowly cutting down the contest as it fades in terms of its importance year after year.
In any event, the fan voting is an interesting wrinkle that I would think would benefit a player like Shumpert coming from the Knicks who are the biggest market team out of the four being represented in the contest.
The Sprite Rising Stars Dunk Contest will be a part of NBA All-Star Saturday night, and will take place this Saturday.
