I know I am a little slow to get to this one but the Knicks has some news to announce today.
The Knicks officially announced the signing of free agent guard Baron Davis. Davis has joined to the team for practice today, however he will be unable to play until at least January with a back injury. In the meantime Toney Douglas will be the starting point guard, which should give the team some shooting at the point guard spot.
Davis was amnestied by the Cleveland Cavaliers last week and has a history of coming into camp out of shape if not properly motivated. With the Knicks he will have a real opportunity to try and lead this team to contention in the East.
If Davis cannot properly motivate himself to play with the three headed monster of Melo, Chandler, and Stoudemire than i am not sure that it is every going to happen for the 31 year old point guard.
It will be interesting to see, when David eventually does return, how he responds to being a supporting player on a contending team. It has been a while since Davis has played for a contender, and the last time he was a part of a team that made the playoffs he was one of the best players on a Golden State Warriors team that upset the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2007 playoffs.
Baron Davis is long removed from those days, and fans should adjust their expectations appropriately; but Davis will provide some veteran help at the point guard spot which this team desperately needs.
Just how much help, only time will tell.
