According to multiple outlets the Knicks have contacted the agents of free agent forwards Caron Butler and Shawne Williams.
It is no secret that the Knicks are looking to add some more depth to their team, while still maintaining enough cap flexibility to be a player in the Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and Dwight Howard sweepstakes. Adding either Caron Butler, or resigning Shawne Williams would effectively fill the hole at backup small forward which they would likely be able to do on a short term contract.
Butler spent the majority of last season on the injured reserve after a severe knee injury. When healthy, Butler has a career scoring average of 16 ppg and could add some much needed toughness on the defensive end of the floor. The question remains whether or not Butler is willing to take a backup role, which is what he will be looking at should he sign with the knicks.
Shawne Williams on the other hand flourished last season with the Knicks, posting career highs in almost every significant category. His three point shooting was a welcomed asset to the Knicks bench last season.
With the CBA not yet completed, any free agent talk at this point shouldn’t be considered significant, however the mere fact that we are finally hearing free agent rumors has to put a smile on the face of NBA fans everywhere.
