The Knicks are a decent team right now, turining into a contender takes a lot of steps and a few things breaking the right way fora team.

Look at the Knicks of the 90s, John Starks worked at a grocery store and became an All-Star. Charles Oakley was a decent player in Chicago and became everything Knicks fans love in New York and Derek Harper was a great signing.

The Knicks drafted poorly, and weren't able to keep it up, but that's what you needs is a few players, draft picks, free agent signings to go your way.

Yeah, if Gallo can turn into a stud then it'd be tough to add Melo since they play the same position. I guess since Gallo's 6'10" he could conceivably be moved to PF, but then that'd mean moving Amar'e to C and suddenly we've got really poor defenders at the 3-5 spots. So ideally in perfect fantasy-world we'd want to get a top point (like CP3 or Deron).

As to whether just Gallo & Stat can be enough (with, as you said, better complimentary pieces around them), I guess it depends whether Gallo can be a star or a superstar, and well, how strong the rest of the league is when that finally happens. Like last year some were saying that Gallo could "potentially" be as good as Dirk. And most would say that if you've got a team built around Dirk and Amar'e, they could compete for a championship with the right pieces around 'em. Of course, one of those would probably need to be an excellent defensive center (see: Joakim, DHoward or even perhaps a Tyson Chandler, Okafor, Nene). And Landry would need to turn into a top defensive stopper against swingmen.

If the Knicks get Carmelo Anthony, Danilo has to be moved. Not sure if he's going to be a superstar, but he can be a good player.

I think Gallinari can be score 25 points per game, but the Knicks don't have the roster around him and Stoudemire to really compete for a championship.
