Felton & Amare named Co-Captains

With the Melo drama currently being in limbo there really hasn’t been much going on in Knicks land, but this weekend the Knicks did announce Raymond Felton and Amare Stoudemire would be our two captains this season.

I really can’t stress enough how much better this offense is going to run this season with a legitimate up tempo point guard. Get excited!

Anyone would be a huge improvement over Chris Duhon, excited to see what Felton can do, although his contract was a little steep (not to mention the three 1st round picks given to Houston to get him, Jordan Hill and two picks) but that was really a no-brainer, Amar’e Stoudemire and Raymond Felton need to step up for the Knicks to be good and naming them captains is just the first phase.

The Knicks traded only two first round picks (and actually one is just a swap) to Houston, and it was for TMac, Sergio Rodriguez and cap space. Maybe you’re implying that the Knicks needed that cap space to sign Felton? If so, that’s not true, they would’ve had enough room for him even if they kept Jared Jeffries. And I gotta say I think Felton’s contract is pretty reasonable. Only 2 years, so it’s very tradeable, and only $7 million a year. Travis Outlaw’s getting paid the same amount, Darko’s getting like $5 mil a year, Ty Thomas is getting like $8 or $9 million. Sure, those three other guys got seriously overpaid, but I do think after Amar’e, Felton is gonna be the one who brings us the most wins ‘cuz D’Antoni’s system NEEDS a decent point guard.

    Agreed on all counts.

Jordan Hill was the eighth overall pick, I was counting him as one of the first round picks. And if the Knicks didn’t make the trade, they would of had enough money for Amar’e Stoudemire and not much else. Felton’s does make him a candidate for a trade, and there wasn’t a better point guard on the market, but I’m just saying if you told Knick fans last summer they would get Raymond Felton and Amar’e Stoudemire by giving up their latest lottery pick, and two first round picks, it’s not a good summer.

Actually they would’ve pretty much had enough cap space to sign Felton without the Jeffries trade (I believe maybe they would’ve had to offer him like $.5 mill less which still should’ve been enough to ensure he’d come), but they wouldn’t have been able to then sign Mozgov too, who’ll be getting $3.6 mill (which, if you exclude Curry, makes Timo the 4th highest paid player on the team — huh?). Of course trading all those picks for the space to sign Mozgov is even worse. I agree the Jeffries trade was awful, but I think one needs to separate it from the summer moves. It’s a bummer we didn’t get LeBron or Wade, but one could argue we made the next best moves we could have (like signing for Felton not only helps at point, but keeps our options open for the future, versus if we’d signed Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay for the max salaries they got, we’d have no wiggle room to pursue a Melo, CP3 or TP down the road.
