The following comes from my friend Shai:
Since Alex generously allowed me to post my ramblings about college basketball players on this Knicks site, I asked him if he would consider posting the following honestly-curious question to Knicks fans:
What exactly are you expecting to happen?
I followed the reign of Isiah with a certain awe. Whether it was overconfidence or a fundamental misunderstanding of the salary cap, I don’t know. I give Walsh credit for shedding all that salary and putting the Knicks in a position to sign two max guys this summer. But for reasons I posted in a comment here, I think the most likely scenario is LeBron staying with the Cavs. New York & New Jersey don’t offer a ring any time soon, if he went to Chicago he would go from BMOC to second-best until he won seven rings, and he won’t go to Miami since he and Wade are both alpha dogs. (Though the jury isn’t clear if LeBron is 100% alpha after these playoffs, but becoming second-banana to Wade is highly unlikely.)
If the Knicks signed LeBron and Bosh, would Knicks fans consider that a best-case scenario? Let’s say you re-sign Lee, you have Danilo/Chandler at the three. Does Walsh look to trade for a point guard? Pin hopes on Douglas or Duhon?
That’s a team that surely could make the playoffs, but are you thinking championship?
Assuming Knicks fans just want to have a better product on the floor, make the playoffs, and have an opportunity to build a roster toward a championship, my next question is, do you guys trust D’Antoni to take you to the promised land? Those Suns teams were great offensively, but none played any defense. Does this concern you, or do you think a replica of the 2005-era Suns with LeBron and led by Mike is a championship squad?
I don’t think it’s impossible, but I just don’t see it. Look forward to your responses.
