Chase & Neil,

Yes, the fact that the trade wouldn't be smart was exactly my point. Neil, there is indeed a clause in Gilbert Arenas' (and most NBA players') contract that technically "could" allow them to nullify the contract, but there's already been talk that it would be extremely tough to do, and the player's union would engage in a lengthy lawsuit battle to prevent such a precedent. As a result, the Wiz have said that they aren't going to pursue that path. So they're stuck with him. Unless he comes back gangbusters next season.

As for the other options ESPN listed, while Curry is a huge (no pun intended) chip, I doubt that Walsh would trade him BEFORE the free agency period begins. He wouldn't risk, say acquiring Jose Calderon, only to find out that LeBron hates how Jose's awful on defense. Or that Okafor has butter fingers. Instead, part of the pitch is that you present these possibilities to LeBron (or whoever) and say we've had discussions and we might be able to acquire one of these guys (like Calderon, Okafor, Andris Biedrins), do any of them appeal to you? Or even if the Knicks don't get LeBron, they might wanna pursue Bosh while keeping David Lee, but that ain't too practical if you've already traded for Okafor.

Basically, making a big trade before the free agency period could seriously limit the team's options. So Walsh will indeed call around to find out what's available, but without a clear picture of the team's future, it wouldn't be prudent to trade for a long-term contract like those mentioned by Haberstroh. It's a quick-fix grab for talent that's more along the lines of how Isiah ran the team.

I actually don't see how this trade makes any sense for the Knicks. Arenas is not even a point guard, and not only is considered toxic but injury--prone.
I believe the Wizards would like to see if they can can some value in return, and if not, I assume they will be able to waive him, I assume there is some clause in his contract that nullifies the team's financial commitment to him by breaking the law?
Only if something like that happens I would see a team signing him to a veteran minimum a-la Latrell Sprewell.

ESPN highlighted some scenarios that seem much more likely: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/39/who-wants-eddy-curry

We're not resigning T-Mac, dude's awful now and that lineup might be worse defensively then the Raptors.

This seriously has 0% chance of happening man.

As much as we need a PG, it's not going to be Arenas, and there is absolutely no way we get rid of Curry's expiring.
