2010 Oscar Picks

Okay, I’mna write about the Knicks’ disastrous weekend tomorrow, and yes, the Academy Awards ain’t got nuthin’ to do with bball (particularly since the doc about LeBron didn’t even get nominated).  However, I figured I’d quickly post my Oscar picks before the big event so that they’re etched in stone.  Or html code.  Note that these are not what I WANT to win, but what I think WILL win.

Best Picture – actually the toughest of the “Big Eight” and while many are going with The Hurt Locker, I think the new voting system for best picture will result in a win for Avatar.

Best Director – Kathryn Bigelow for Hurt Locker

Best Actor – Jeff Bridge in Crazy Heart

Best Actress – Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side

Best Supporting Actor – Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds (not to sound like a man who supports stammering, but don’t it bother you that his first name is missing an “er” at the end of it?)

Best Supporting Actress – Mo’Nique in Precious

Best Original Screenplay – Inglorious Basterds (but The Hurt Locker could pull it out)

Best Adapted Screenplay – Up In The Air

Best Animated Film – Up

Best Art Direction – Avatar

Best Cinematography – The Hurt Locker (although it could be Avatar — it depends if people discount the look of the film as just being digital effects)

Best Editing – Hurt Locker

Best Foreign Film – The White Ribbon (but there are always weird picks in this category)

Best Costume – Coco Before Chanel (backup pick, and yeah, I know it’s lame to be adding these, but hey it’s my blog: The Young Victoria)

Best Make-up – Star Trek (I’d say The Young Victoria is my backup, but considering there are only three films nominated in this category it’d be really, really, really lame if I kinda picked two out of the three of ’em.  So I won’t do that.  Even though we all know I just did.)

Best Feature Documentary – The Cove (backup choice: Food, Inc.)

Best Original Song – The Weary Kind from Crazy Heart.

Best Original Score – Up (‘cuz of that opening montage, but again Hurt Locker’s always a good second choice).

Best Sound Editing – Avatar (but could be Hurt Locker!)

Best Sound Mixing – Avatar (why do we have to watch separate awards for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing when most people have no frickin’ idea what the difference is between them?  Everyone always says how the Academy Awards are too long, and the producers say how they always try to make ’em shorter, so how about we toss this duo into the special Academy Technical awards or whatever that they do earlier elsewhere?  Yeah, the sound people and their moms will be bummed that they don’t get to appear on the big show, but c’mon, they should be psyched out of their minds even if they win on the non-televised part.)

Best Visual Effects – Avatar

Best Documentary Short – China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears Of Sichuan Province (it’s got disaster & tears in the title, c’mon)

Best Animated Short – A Matter of Loaf & Death (made by the Wallace & Grommit folks… maybe it even is another short about them… regardless, they’ve already won three times in this category and ya know what they say, fourth time’s the charm).

Best Live Action Short – Kavi (sounds much more bad ass than the others.  Like c’mon, no way is “Miracle Fish” gonna win over “Kavi.”  Then again, for all I know Kavi could be some foreign word meaning “Love Puppy.”)

There ya have it.  If this don’t help ya win your Oscar Pool, then I don’t know what will.
