Pretty slow day in terms of Knicks news, so I turn to New Jersey for an interesting scoop. It’s being reported that the Nets have bought out Rafer Alston, thus making him a free agent. The Heat and the Cavs are the two names I’ve heard regarding Alston’s future.
The Heat makes the most sense here, as they are starting Carlos Arroyo at point as of late, and Chalmers regression at the point. The Heat need a guy like Alston on the offensive end and defensive if Alston plays like he did in Orlando last year. An Alston/Wade/Beasley combo should coincide pretty nicely.
The Cavs being interested makes no sense, as this team is pretty much set at the guard spot. Mo and Gibson dominate the minutes at point so I’m not sure where exactly Alston would fit in Mike Brown’s rotation. Alston also needs the ball to be effective and with LeBron on this team it really wouldn’t be a good fit.
Then there are our Knicks. Knicks were offered Alston and Battie for Nate and Darko earlier this season, and thankfully the Knicks turned it down. All four contracts expire after this season so, ideally, it would accomplish nothing. Nate is back in the lineup so Alston really has no place here either. Duhon has played great, but this team is going to be tired after the All-Star break so more guard help wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
I still expect Alston to Miami to happen any day now.
