The summer of 2010.
I’ll allow that to digest for a few minutes to give my readers the appropriate amount of time to daydream about what could be. However, my newest post will not be about what can come with free agency in 2010, but rather what shouldn’t.
Lebron James will be a free agent in the summer of 2010, Chris Bosh will be a free agent (but there is speculation he will be moved this summer), Amare Stoudamire, Ray Allen, and several other key components to creating a championship team.
The Knicks aren’t quite there depth wise but what if I were to say that the Knicks may only need one piece come 2010?
The Knicks are going to lock up Nate and Lee this summer that’s a given, but how much will that cost? Should the Knicks spend a lot on fan favorites or keep cutting costs for 2010?
The most overlooked problem with the idea of Lebron to NY has to be that the Knicks already have two very skilled forwards in Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari. Adding James would mean drafting both was a couple of wasted picks and that the Knicks have once again given up on building from within.
Perhaps Lebron to NY wasn’t meant to be and the Knicks should continue to build from within and create a stronger core of solid players.
Iverson will be on the market this offseason and with him not getting any younger and not having many options why shouldn’t the Knicks at least take a look at him? Pairing him with Chris Duhon could actually work quite well as Duhon is a passer and doesn’t dominate the ball like Iverson. Adding Iverson would take the pressure off the back court for the most part and add a big scorer into a scoring system. Iverson won’t be looking for much this offseason and the Knicks need a big time scoring 2 guard, why not?
The Knicks only concern that could be fixed in the 2010 free agent pool is a bigger post presence. If the Knicks can’t grab a big time post player in the draft this year then look for the Knicks to make a strong play for Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudamire. I’d love to add Bosh to the rotation and pairing him with Lee might do the trick in ending the Knicks playoff drought and turn them into instant contenders.
So yes, I’m worried about Lebron coming in 2010 and disrupting the supporting cast we currently have and would ultimately set the team back personel wise a couple of seasons.
